Commerce man killed, woman burned in weekend house fire

By B.J. Williams
State fire investigators are looking into the cause of a deadly fire in Jackson County over the weekend.

Glenn Allen with the Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner's Office said firefighters were called to the home on 91 Leigh Street in Commerce around 9:20 Saturday night.

Allen identified the victim as Patrick Emerson, 78. He said a woman living in the home was injured.

"Injured in the blaze was Catherine King, 49. She sustained minor burns and smoke inhalation," Allen said. "She was taken to the Athens Regional Hospital and her condition is unknown at this time."

Allen said he did not know the relationship between Emerson and King.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Allen said preliminary information indicated the fire was accidental.

"There was no electrical power to the home and the occupants were using candles for light," Allen said. He said there were no working smoke detectors in the house.

Less than two weeks ago, an 80-year-old man died in a house fire in Jefferson, which is also located in Jackson County.

"[Emerson's death] makes the twelfth fire-related death for Georgia in 2018," Allen said.
