Gwinnett Police: Armed man shot, killed by officer identified as Buford man

Gwinnett Police have identified the man fatally shot in an altercation with police Thursday morning on Peachtree Industrial and Nelson Brogdon Boulevards.

Steven D. Hutchins of Buford, 27, lived a short distance from the incident site, on Gold Creek Trail.

In the update, Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Michelle Pihera noted the agency had responded to the Gold Creek Trail home once this month and once last year. On January 22, police responded to a "suicide attempt" call, though the call subject refused all medical treatment. On September 5, 2017, Hutchins filed a theft report involving his roommate.

Police said Hutchins' next of kin in Illinois have been notified, and any further updates will come from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Pihera said earlier in the day officers initially responded to a call about a man with a gun walking along Peachtree Industrial Boulevard toward Ga. 20/Nelson Brogdon Blvd.

She said officers arrived within minutes of the roughly 4 a.m. call and confronted the man in front of a laundromat in a strip shopping center.  Officers could see the man's gun in his waistband.

"The officers tried talking to the man," Pihera said.  "At one point, the man pulled the gun out of his waistband and began to raise it at the officers. One of the officers fired at the man, striking him."

A responding officer, also a SWAT medic, treated the man while the Gwinnett County Fire Department responded and determined the man had died.

Pihera said investigators hope to gain information from surveillance cameras on the building near the scene.

"At this time, it is unclear if this event was captured on film," she said.

Following standard procedure for officer-involved shootings, police requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to look into the incident.

The northbound side of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard was closed for a good portion of morning rush hour while authorities investigated the incident.
