No injuries, home damaged in Jackson County bus accident

No one was hurt but a mobile home was badly damaged in a school bus accident in Jackson County Wednesday morning.

Georgia State Trooper First Class M. Meyer said around 6:15 a.m., the Jackson County school bus was coming around the cul de sac of Hidden Oak Lane when the driver had to deal with a "commotion" on the bus.

"She attempted to engage the parking break and her statement was she wasn't sure if she had gotten it all the way engaged when she got up to try and check on the children," said Meyer. "They were on a little bit of a downhill grade at that point and the bus took off forward, went down an embankment and struck the residence."

No one, including the six children aged four through 11, the bus driver or the homeowner were injured during accident. The bus and the home were both damaged.

"It was a mobile home residence on a block foundation and it sustained a pretty signficant amount of damage," said Meyer. "One of the homeowners was inside at the time, he wasn't injured when the bus hit the house, he wasn't struck by any object or debris." Meyer said the school system planned to have a mechanic take a look at the bus and see if it is drivable.

The school board released the following statement on their Facebook page after the incident:

Everyone is safe after an accident on Bus 02-3 (SJES) this morning. After the driver stopped to attend to a sick child, the bus rolled and struck the corner of a house. The six children onboard the bus were taken on to school by our superintendent and their principal after being checked out by first responders and after their parents were notified. We are grateful to those who responded to the scene.

Meyer said they were not filing any charges in the case.
