By B.J. Williams

A man hit and killed by a tractor trailer on I-985 in Gwinnett County last Friday morning is believed to have stepped in front of the rig on purpose.

A report released this week by the Gwinnett County Police Department identified the victim as Michael G. Baessler, 67, of Sugar Hill.

The investigating officer wrote that the driver of the tractor trailer, L.C. Carter of Conyers, was traveling northbound on I-985 approaching Woodward Mill Road. Carter told the officer he saw a vehicle pulled over on the right shoulder of the road, and he tried to move into the left lane.

"As he approached the bridge, Mr. Carter said the driver of the vehicle that was pulled over got out of his vehicle and then ran into the roadway," the report stated.

The officer said Carter stopped and called 911.

The Gwinnett County Medical Examiner is also participating in the investigation, according to the police report.
