Girls basketball: Banks County stays hot in 8-AA; Lakeview, Chestatee, Buford, Branch all take region wins

TIGER — Banks County ran its win streak to eight straight and also stayed perfect atop the Region 8-AA standings after taking a 59-49 win over Rabun County Tuesday night on the road.

Defense was the catalyst for the Lady Leopards (14-3, 4-0 Region 8-AA), who recorded 12 blocks on the night. They led just 30-28 at halftime and 40-36 heading into the fourth quarter but pulled away in the final eight minutes with a 19-10 finish.

Allison Smith led Banks County with 19 points and 4 blocks. Jaycie Bowen had 14 points and 3 blocks and Amber Williams 11 points and 5 blocks. 

Kailynn Gilstrap added 8 points and Maddie Thomas 7 points for the Lady Leopards.

Banks County next will play host to Putnam County (13-1, 3-1) on Friday in a huge battle for first place.


LAKEVIEW ACADEMY GIRLS 57,
COMMERCE 43

The Lady Lions rolled out to a 30-12 halftime lead en route to the Region 8-A win.

Sadie Thrailkill had a monster game to lead Lakeview with 15 points, 19 rebounds, and 5 steals. Tori Taylor added 18 points, including four 3-pointers, for the Lady Lions (9-7, 6-0 Region 8-A).

Lakeview next will travel to Towns County on Saturday in region action.

Commerce (6-10, 2-3) will play host to Tallulah Falls on Friday in a Region 8-A contest.

 

CHETATEE GIRLS 59,
BLESSED TRINITY 46

The Lady War Eagles picked up their first Region 7-AAAA win, and second straight overall victory, with a balanced scoring attack.

Chestatee (8-10, 1-2 Region 7-AAAA) has won two straight and four of its last five overall.

It was a tight game in the early going as Chestatee led just 16-12. But they extended the lead to 33-24 by halftime and then took a 41-32 lead into the fourth quarter.

Chestatee was able to maintain its lead by hitting 12-of-17 free throws for the game, going 8-of-15 in the fourth quarter.

Maggie McNair paced Chestatee with 15 points. Callyssa Tyner added 14 points, 9 coming in the second half, and Lindsey Caudell 11 points, 8 of those coming after halfime.

Blessed Trinity (4-12, 0-2) has now lost nine straight games overall. The Lady Titans were led Katie Hynekamp with a game-high 20 points.

Chestatee next will play host to West Hall on Friday in another key region showdwon.

 

FLOWERY BRANCH GIRLS 61,
WALNUT GROVE 20

The Lady Falcons opened a three-game Region 8-AAAAA road trip with a victory over the Lady Warriors.

The win moved Flowery Branch (14-4, 4-1 Region 8-AAAAA) into a second-place tie with Cedar Shoals in the region standings.

Flowery Branch jumped out to a 22-6 lead after the first quarter and took a 35-10 lead into the intermission. The Lady Falcons defense was superb giving up just six points or less in every quarter.

Caroline Wysocki led Flowery Branch with 18 points. Ashlee Locke added 10 and Lexie Sengkhammee 9 for the Lady Falcons.

Flowery Branch will travel to Johnson on Friday and Cedar Shoals on Saturday in a pair of region matchups.


BUFORD GIRLS 63,
JOHNSON 17

Preston Reid led 12 Lady Wolves in the scoring column with 14 points and Audrey Weiner had 12 in a dominant Region 8-AAAAA contest.

Buford (12-2, 5-0 Region 8-AAAAA) has won three straight, all in the region, and will travel to Loganville (11-5, 3-2) on Wednesday in a makeup game from earlier.

Johnson will play host to Flowery Branch on Friday.
