Georgia gas prices dropping, recovering from hurricanes Harvey, Irma

Gas prices fell this past week as southeastern states recover from hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

AAA reports the prices have gone down in the state for nine consecutive days, reaching an average price of $2.67 a gallon Sunday. That price is 5-cents less than this time last week, but 32 cents more than a year ago.

"If it weren't for the recent hurricanes, gas prices would be about 25 cents lower," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Since gas prices decline much slower than they rise, it could take a few weeks before they reach equilibrium. Gas prices in the southeastern U.S. should drop another 5 to 10 cents this week."

Jenkins said that supply and demand is returning to normal.

A price trend report from GasBuddy.com showed the average price at $2.63, dropping about 3.9 cents per gallon in the past week.

Last year, GasBuddy reported the average price on this date was $2.35

The most expensive gas in the state was in Atlanta with the average price of regular unleaded at $2.72, AAA reports. GasBuddy's estimate was a mere penny less, at $2.71. Augusta had the lowest average price at $2.57 and $2.54 from AAA and GasBuddy, respectively.
