Softball roundup: Buford holds off N. Gwinnett in final battle of defending champions

SUWANEE — Buford took the rubber match between two of the state's top teams Wednesday.

The Class AAAAA No. 1 Lady Wolves held off Class AAAAAAA North Gwinnett 4-2 in girls softball action at North Gwinnett.

It was third of three games scheduled between the defending state champions. The road team won all three games with Buford winning the season series 2-1.

Senior Logan Caymol turned in perhaps her best performance of the season in the circle holding a potent Lady Bulldogs lineup to just one hit through six innings. North Gwinnett trailed 4-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but got a two-run home run from Lauren Prescott to cut the lead in half. Caymol closed out the win getting the final two batters of the game.

Buford senior Arielle Oda led the offense getting on base four times, including three hits, and had three stolen bases and scored twice. Junior Mariah Wicker ha a solo home run and senior Kelsey Bennett had a hit and RBI and jjunior Shea Bayreuther had a hit and scored a run for the Lady Wolves.

Buford (15-2) will resume Region 8-AAAAA play on the road Thursday against Cedar Shoals in Athens.
