Lake Lanier Association begins clean project near Olympic Park

The Lake Lanier Association began a project last week to remove tons of debris near the park's boathouse on the lake.

According to Executive Director Joanna Cloud, the debris adjacent to the boathouse storage facility has been a priority for them for several years.

"I think some of this debris dates back to when the venue was built. As we have seen in other areas on Lanier, the trash there has seemed to be a magnet for more trash to collect there," said Cloud.

The debris is primarily abandoned dock remains and because of the large amount of debris, Cloud says it is a project that will require more effort than volunteers during the upcoming annual Shore Sweep.

Boat Dock Works will be in charge of the removal of the debris and Advanced Disposal has donated roll off container equipment for extraction.

Debris removal at the Olympic Venue began Tuesday, but Cloud believes the project will take several months.

"The way this particular trash pile is, going back into a wooded area, it makes removal difficult. With lake levels being down it will be difficult to get equipment back there. We will try to get as much as we can now," said Cloud.

"If lake levels cooperate and rise in the first quarter of 2018, we will make a second pass at it."

This initiative also marks the beginning of the Lake Lanier Association's 29th year of leadership for the annual Shore Sweep program.
