Toccoa police call in GBI to help investigate morning shooting

TOCCOA — Toccoa Police Chief Tim Jarrell said a Toccoa woman is undergoing emergency surgery at the hospital in Gainesville after suffering a gunshot wound about 6:30 Thursday morning.

“Toccoa Police Department received a 9-1-1 call of a person being shot at 614 South Pond Street,” Jarrell said. “When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a 54-year-old white female who had been the victim of a gunshot wound.”

Stephens County Emergency Medical Services personnel transported the woman, whose name is not being released, by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

“She is currently undergoing surgery – emergency surgery,” Jarrell said.

Jarrell said his department has asked for help from state investigators.

“We have requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the GBI Crime Scene Unit,” Jarrell said.

Jarrell declined to release further details, but said police don’t believe Thursday morning’s incident was random.

“That’s all the information that we’re going to release at this time,” Jarrell said. “We’re very early in our investigation, and as soon as we have more we will update.”
