Hall County schools make up almost half of Georgia's 'healthiest schools' list

Of the 31 Georgia schools that made this year's list of "America's Healthiest Schools," 15 of them are in the Hall County School District.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation unveiled the annual list Tuesday.

A total of 323 schools across the country received National Healthy Schools Award, which honor a growing national movement to create healthier schools for kids. The Alliance said in a press release that nearly half of all recognized schools came from Texas, California, Georgia and Arizona.

In Hall County, 12 of the schools that received recognition were elementary schools and two were middle schools; there was one high school recognized. (See the list below for all of the schools in Georgia that were recognized.)

“Every child deserves to go to a healthy school. We couldn’t be prouder to recognize these schools for leading the way,” said Dr. Howell Wechsler, CEO of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, in a press statement. “The administrators, food service staff, physical educators, classroom teachers and parents in these communities have all worked incredibly hard to prioritize student health and set kids on a path of lifelong success, both in and out of the classroom.”

According to the press statement, all recognized schools meet or exceed federal nutrition standards for school meals and snacks and offer daily breakfast for students. The schools also implement district wellness policies and update progress on a yearly basis. Also, the recognized schools provided students with at least 60 minutes of physical education per week and ensure physical activity throughout the school day.
