Larry Timms takes Hartwell Crate Late Model victory

By Brandon Reed Reporter

Larry Timms swept the night at Georgia’s Hartwell Speedway on Saturday.

The Greenwood, South Carolina Speedster started out by setting fast time around the 3/8 mile clay raceway in Crate Late Model qualifying.

Timms then took the lead at the start of the 20-lap feature and would hold the point from wire-to-wire to score the race victory.

That’s not to say it came easy. Several drivers stayed in pursuit of Timms, as the previous week’s feature winner Danny Sanders, Josh Bishop and Brad Rachels gave chase, all while jockeying for position. At one point, the front four ran nose-to-tail, as Timms worked to hold off the competition.

In the end, he was able to do just that, as he came away with the feature victory and the $1,250 winner’s payday.

Rachels had to settle for second, with Sanders third, Bishop fourth and Jimmy Ivester in fifth.

Mike Payne, Jerry Rachels, Brad Morehead, Grant Jordan and Eric Veal rounded out the finishing order.

In other action, Shane Yarborough appeared to be on his way to the Hobby Stock victory. But when he tangled with the second place car of Cameron Crowe, sending both cars spinning off turn two.

While Crowe was able to continue, Shane Yarborough’s night was over.

From there, Alex Yarborough charged to the lead, and went on to score the feature win. Taylor Griffith finished in second in his race at the speedway. Crowe recovered to come home in third, with Joe Cash in fourth and Chad Atha in fifth.

Justin Sims took top honors in the Modified Street feature, beating out Thomas Segars for the victory. Preston Strickland finished in third, with Aaron McIntosh in fourth and Jennifer Everett in fifth.

Stephen House outran the previous week’s winner, Cal Moon, for the win in the Stock V8 feature. Shannon Duck, Paul Moore and Chad Hoopaugh rounded out the top five.

In the Mini Stock feature, it was Justin Taylor holding off a hard charge from Holton Bradshaw for the victory. Pete Whitley finished in third, followed by Jordan Brown in fourth and Brent Couch in fifth.

Randy Powell took advantage of a flat tire on Joel Powell, Jr.’s car to take the lead in the Up Front feature, and went on to hold off Travis Barbare for the victory. Stacy Foster finished in second, with Jason Richey in fourth, while Powell, Jr. recovered to finish in fifth.

Hartwell Speedway returns to action on Saturday, August 12, with a full slate of regular feature races. For more information, visit Hartwell-Speedway.com.
