KANSAS CITY — Jacob Peterson scored a stoppage time goal to lift Atlanta United to a 1-1 draw against Sporting Kansas City on Sunday night at Children’s Mercy Park. Peterson’s goal came in his first match against his former club, where he spent the last five seasons, and also helped extend Atlanta’s unbeaten streak to six consecutive matches.

After a scoreless first half, Sporting Kansas City got on the board in the 59th minute as Benny Feilhaber converted a penalty kick. Leandro Gonzalez Pirez fouled Latif Blessing on the edge of the box, giving Feilhaber the opportunity from the spot. He went to Brad Guzan’s right for the goal.

However, Atlanta equalized late for the second consecutive match. In the first minute of stoppage time, Michael Parkhurst lobbed a ball into the box that Brandon Vazquez was able to play down amidst two Sporting Kansas City defenders. Peterson finally latched onto the loose ball and drilled a left-footed shot past Tim Melia to the far post for the equalizer.

Atlanta United (10-7-5, 35 points) returns to action on Wednesday, Aug. 23 against D.C. United. Kickoff from RFK Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on FOX Sports South.
