Softball roundup: Banks sweeps pair, Chestatee gets win on opening day

GAINESVILLE — Banks County opened its season with a pair of impressive wins over Chestatee and Gainesville Saturday at Brenau University.

The Lady Leopards blanked Chestatee 6-0 and then knocked off Gainesville 12-2 in five innings in the second game. 

Against Chestatee, the Lady Leopards took the lead on a double in the first inning by Jaycie Bowen, who also earned the win on the mound pitching six innings allowing no runs and six hits and fanning six. Seniors Abby Bailey and Amelia Lyons also contributed at the plate, while Jill Martinet had a double and one RBI. Banks County scored four runs in the fourth on a three run-double by Bowen.

Against Gainesville, Banks County (2-0) scored two in the first inning to grab the lead. Gainesville tied the game at 2 with a pair of runs in the third but the Lady Leopards reclaimed the lead with four runs in the fourth and blew it open with six more in the fifth. Jill Martinet pitched three innings and allowed no earned runs. Jaycie Bowen came on in the fourth and shut down the Gainesvile offense the rest of the way.

Chestatee responded from its loss to Banks County with a thrilling come-from-behind win over the Lady Red Elephants.

Gainesville (0-2) jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead with a run in the first and four in the second. But the Lady Red Elephants could not hold it.

The Lady War Eagles (1-1) pulled within 5-3 with three runs in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game. Chestatee pulled out the victory with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
