Man killed during domestic dispute at Athens apartment

A 24-year-old man suffered a fatal stab wound during an altercation with his roommate at their East Broad Street apartment.

Just after 4:00 pm on Friday, officers with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department were dispatched to 909 East Broad Street in reference to a possible fatality where they discovered the man lying on the apartment floor with a stab wound according to spokesman Epifanio Rodriguez.

"EMS was called to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital, where he later died from his wound," said Rodriguez.

The investigation found that the dispute started over the phone between the victim and his 21-year-old white male roommate over the younger roommate's decision to move out of the apartment. The victim then arrived at the apartment where  a physical altercation began between the two. It was during the altercation that victim received the fatal stab wound.

"No arrest have been made at this point and our detectives are investigating the possibility of this being an act of self defense," said Rodriguez.

The names of the two involved in the altercation, both of which are not students at the University of Georgia or nearby schools, will not be released until Monday, to give the next-of-kin time to notify the rest of the family according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
