Residents of Banks County plan August fundraiser for injured basketball player Kahmal Wiley

The Banks County basketball community will host an August fundraiser to help with continued medical expenses for Kahmal Wiley, a student-athlete that lost his legs as the result of a car accident in April.

The fundraiser will be held Saturday, August 5 at Banks County High School with all proceeds going to Wiley's medical expenses.

Wiley was seriously injured in a one-car accident on Saturday on his way to visit his father in Athens on April 15. The then high school senior suffered extensive injuries, including the amputation of both legs.

Coordinator of the fundraiser, Banks County teacher, Tondra Boswell, said the all day event will also be a celebration for Kahmal.

"It starts with a 5k in the morning, a car show at 10:00 a.m.., we will have a basketball camp for kids and we will have bar-b-que," said Boswell.

Boswell said she is hoping to sell at least 500 BBQ tickets which are $8 a piece. Several other fundraising opportunities will be available including raffles, concert tickets, gift baskets and other items according to Boswell.

"Kahmal obviously is such an incredible basketball player and lead the team in so many ways but he also is very resilient. Just this past week he sent pictures of him fishing and going to the movies and has kept a smile on his face," she said.

"That is what he has always been known for. Even on the court, in the worse situations, he had that big smile. He has not let the situation discourage him. He is determined to get going."
