Suspect in shooting of Forsyth County deputy takes own life

By AccessWDUN staff

The suspect who shot and wounded a Forsyth County Deputy Sunday, took his own life, according to the sheriff's office.

The deputy was shot Sunday afternoon while answering a domestic dispute call in the Hickory Hills subdivision.

"Upon arrival, deputies were attempting to get the subject to come outside to speak with them when they came under significant gunfire from the residence. Deputies returned the gunfire," the sheriff's office said in a news release.

Negotiators and the SWAT team from Forsyth County and SWAT teams from Cherokee County and North Fulton counties had surrounded the home early in the evening.  The Georgia State Patrol was also involved in the response.  In an 8:20 p.m. update on social media, authorities said no additional deputies or others had been injured and the suspect had taken his own life at some point.

The injured deputy - who was shot in the leg - has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home with family, according to a sheriff's office Facebook post.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the crime scene investigation at the request of Sheriff Ron Freeman.

The incident happened in the north end of the county.
