Investigators seek information about Sunday fire in Cornelia

CORNELIA — The fire that damaged a Cornelia home on Sunday remains under investigation.

That fire on Berry Street was reported shortly after 11 p.m., and Cornelia firefighters were dispatched, though officials aren’t sure when it happened.

“The fire was out and in the cooling process when authorities arrived,” said Glenn Allen, spokesman for the state fire marshal’s office, which is investigating the fire.

Cornelia Fire Chief Chad Dyer said firefighters were paged a possible residential structure fire involving the home at 329 Berry St, Cornelia, at 11:09 p.m. July 9. The occupants were not home at the time.

“We responded two engines initially, and upon the engines’ arrival the fire was out,” Dyer said. “It self-extinguished, it appears at some point in time. It was just sooted up really bad inside the house, a lot of soot from materials that had been burning.”

Dyer said the fire occurred at a single-family residence, noting there was moderate smoke and soot damage, but no substantial structural damage to the home.

Some dogs and reptiles located inside the residence were removed, Dyer said. Those animals were relocated by people who had been checking on them during the owner’s absence.

“They appeared to be in good health,” Dyer said.

Firefighters remained on scene for about an hour and 45, then police and fire investigators remained longer, Dyer said.

Allen and Dyer said the fire remains under investigation and no determination of the cause has been made at this point.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call (800) 282-5804.
