UPDATE: Portion of West Academy Street in Gainesville closed indefinitely because of falling bricks

A portion of West Academy Street in Downtown Gainesville is closed until further notice, officials announced Monday afternoon.

City officials said there is nothing wrong with the road, but they discovered bricks had fallen from the chimney at the Homestar Financial Corp. building on the corner of Washington Street and West Academy, so the road was closed as a safety precaution. 

For now, the road is closed between Washington Street and Oak Street, but inspectors plan to be on the scene Tuesday morning to assess the building.
