Crews rescue five people from Chattahoochee River in Gwinnett County

By B.J. Williams

For the second time this week, rescue crews from Gwinnett County and Johns Creek had to retrieve a stranded group on the Chattahoochee River.

Gwinnett County Fire Department Capt. Tommy Rutledge said firefighters responded just before 9 p.m. Friday to a report of five people who had become stranded on some logs on the river between Abbotts Bridge and Rogers Bridge.

Rutledge said the group was apparently rafting down the river and became stuck. He said he was told no one in the group was wearing a life jacket.

"Gwinnett Fire SRT and Johns Creek SRT both responded to the area to conduct recon on the river," Rutledge wrote in an email report. "Gwinnett Boat-1 was able to locate the group and safely carried them to their takeout point at Rogers Bridge. There were no injuries reported."

On Monday, a family of five was rescued on the river when the father in the group became ill and couldn't make it safely to shore.
