Winder house fire destroys home, kills dog

A house was totally destroyed and a dog died after a fire at the home in Winder Thursday morning.

According to a release from Barrow County Emergency Services, crews arrived at the home in the 1600 block of Bismarck Circle around 11 a.m. and found the single story residence fully involved in flames.

Neighbors were in the garage of the home, trying to remove two dogs in kennels. They were told to leave the garage and shortly after, the ceiling collapsed.

After knocking down the fire, the home was deemed a total loss. Barrow County and State Fire Marshal investigators determined the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction.

The fire was intense enough to damage the homes on either side of it, but the fire did not spread. Crews battled the fire with truck mounted deck nozzles and handlines and also worked to protect the surrounding homes at the same time. Two nearby homes suffered damage, melted siding on one home and heat damage to the other.
