Firefighters extinguish flash fire at Mount Vernon Mills

ALTO — Firefighters from several stations quickly extinguished a fire at Mount Vernon Mills in Alto around noon Monday.

“We responded there and found that they had a flash fire which ignited several large rolls of yarn and a machine that had fire in the ductwork of the machine,” said Baldwin Fire Chief Joe Roy. “The fire was quickly knocked down and salvage and overhaul was done, which took about an hour. After their employees removed the burnt rolls of yard to the outside of the building, we then used a large fan to remove the smoke from the building.”

Fire departments from Baldwin, Habersham County (Station 12), Cornelia and Lee Arrendale State Prison responded. Additionally, Habersham County stationed in engine at Baldwin Fire Department to respond to additional calls.

“We had one engine form Station 12; one engine, one ladder truck and one rescue from Baldwin; one engine and one ladder from Cornelia Fire Department,” Roy said.

Additionally, an ambulance from Banks County Fire/EMS responded to provide rehab for firefighters.
