GBI document ID's deputies, citizens in East Hall officer-involved shooting case

The identities of the officers and citizens involved in an exchange of gun fire in East Hall County have come to light in a Georgia Bureau of Investigation document obtained by AccessWDUN.

The shooting happened Friday on Campbell Road, leaving a deputy — identified in the document as Sgt. James Brown — wounded, and injuring a woman, Jennifer Harris, and a 7-year-old child.

Justin Castillo allegedly exchanged gunfire with Sgt. Patrick Tolan, though Castillo has not been arrested or formally charged in the incident, according to Hall County Sheriff's Deputy Stephen Wilbanks.

In a prior interview with AccessWDUN, Wilbanks said the gun fire came from a car, which then swerved at the deputies. The report does not indicate which person was driving the vehicle.

Brown was shot in the torso, and his ballistic vest stopped the bullet. He was also grazed in the head.

Wilbanks indicated Brown will be okay.

Deputies were unsure if the injuries to the woman and child inside the car were the result of bullets, or shattering glass.

Harris and the 7-year-old child suffered non-life threatening injuries.
