Georgia Mountain Food Bank to host first Family Day event

By Russell Brown

The Georgia Mountain Food Bank is hoping to raise awareness about the resources they offer to families on Saturday, June 17 with a free family day.

The free event will be on Saturday, June 17, from 10 AM until 2 PM at the GMFB warehouse located at 1642 Calvary Industrial Drive, SW in Gainesville. The event is free and open to the public and will include a variety of food, games and activities for all ages.

"Family Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate summer with our community, while also raising awareness about all the resources the Food Bank offers to families" said Kay Blackstock, executive director at GMFB.

"Summer is one of our busiest seasons. Many families struggle to put additional meals on the table while children are out of school. This event is a great way to educate people on how they can help support the Food Bank's mission to end local hunger, while also enjoying some summer fun in the process," Blackstock said.

Families and groups can enjoy hamburgers and hot dogs, face painting and tours of the food bank at no cost. Bowl painting will be available for $8/bowl, and proceeds will benefit the GMFB's annual fundraiser, Empty Bowl, slated for September 26, 2017 and hosted by Homestar Financial.

Rae Abshire, author of the children's book "Andi's Perfect Toy" will be in attendance signing books for a $20 donation that will then be donated to the food bank.

Other community partners include Scout Crew 240 volunteers and Northeast Georgia Humane Society, who will be on-site with information on animals available for adoption.
