Baseball: Trojans' Mongero named COY; Taber Mongero, Reese Olson Co-POY in AAA

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

The accolades continue to roll in for the North Hall baseball team.

Less than two weeks removed from capturing the program's first-ever state title, head coach Trent Mongero and two players earned statewide awards this past weekend.

Trent Mongero was named the Georgia Dugout Preview Magazine's Class AAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Trojans to their first state championship in the 60-year history of the program. Also, a pair of North Hall players -- Taber Mongero and Reese Olson -- shared Class AAA Player of the Year honors.

The elder Mongero was ever humble.

"My first reaction was that I was just very thankful of our staff and the players on the team," he said. "It really should be the 'Staff of the Year' award. They did a tremendous job all season. It takes great coaches and great players. It's more than just one person.

"But probably the most rewarding thing is to see the North Hall program get the honor and recognition it deserves. All the players over the years, and especially the ones over the past five years, have all worked tremendously hard to get us to this point. I'm just so proud of everyone."

Taber Mongero hit .483 during the regular season, then batted .452 in the postseason. He was also the winning pitcher in North Hall's pivotal Game 3 against Pace Academy in the first round. Olson was 13-1 on the mound with a 1.40 ERA during the regular season. The 13 wins set a new school record for wins in a season. He went a perfect 5-0 during the postseason.
