Investigators probing cause of Baldwin house fire

BALDWIN — Firefighters from several departments quickly extinguished a fire inside a Baldwin house Monday night.

At about 6:40 p.m., fire units were dispatched to 230 Chatham St., Baldwin, for a house fire. Baldwin Fire Department and Habersham County Fire Department had units gathered nearby for a training exercise and provided an immediate response, according to Baldwin Fire officials.

“The first units arriving on scene advised of an 1,800-square-foot structure with light smoke showing from the exterior of the home,” according to a report by Firefighter Gus Galloway, provided by Fire Chief Joe Roy. “Due to the quick response of fire units, crews were able to deploy and man two hose lines and gather a team for searching of possible victims. Search teams were able to quickly enter the structure and determine that there were no entrapped victims located inside the structure. Once the structure was cleared of any victims, crews were able to enter the structure, locate a fire in the basement, and extinguish the fire quickly.”

In addition to Baldwin and Habersham fire units, Lee Arrendale State Prison Fire Department and Habersham Emergency Medical Services responded.

Roy extended the department’s appreciation for the assistance of the other agencies.

An investigator from the state fire marshal’s office was called and responded to the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
