Medical center exceeds $1.5 billion in local, state economic impact

Hospital officials say Northeast Georgia Medical center has exceeded $1.5 billion in local and state economic impact.

Officials sited a report by the Georgia Hospital Association, in a media release.

The report for 2015 found that the hospital also provided more than $45 million in uncompensated care and sustained more than 12,000 full-time jobs throughout the region and state.  The jobs are in addition to more than 7,000 directly employed by the health system.

It's the first such report that includes the medical center Braselton Campus, which opened in April of 2015.  While it reflects the medical center in Barrow County, that hospital was not a part of the system during the report.

"Every day, NGHS consciously makes decisions in order to secure the future of our organization and strive for a better tomorrow,"  Carol Burrell, president and CEO of the medical center's parent organization, Northeast Georgia Health System. "As always, these numbers consistently remind us of the important economic role we play in our region and state and the large number of people who rely daily on our commitment to responsible stewardship."

The medical center had direct expenditures of over $681 million in 2015, according to the release.

The study does not take into account the impact of doctors' offices and long term care facilities operated by the health system.
