Lumpkin County authorities are investigating the alleged rape of a female jogger near the Dahlonega reservoir Wednesday evening.

The victim, whose name is being withheld, told authorities she was running on the trail system near the the reservoir when she was attacked and raped by an unknown male perpetrator.

Chief Justin Gaines with the University of North Georgia Police Department, in an email alert sent to the surrounding community, said the attack happened sometime between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., and the victim was able to provide a brief description of the suspect.

"The victim stated that the male had brown hair and a beard, and was wearing a blue shirt," Gaines explained. He noted that the attacker was described as a white male, apparently between his late 20's and early 40's.

He added that anyone with relevant information in the case is asked to contact either UNG Police or the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office by calling 706-684-0414.

The email alert from UNG Police did not clarify whether the victim was enrolled at the university.

The investigation has been turned over to the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office posted on their Facebook page Thursday night if anyone saw the man while on the trails in the hours of 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday to please contact their office at 706-864-3633 and ask to speak with an investigator. They also encouraged residents to call 911 if they see suspicious activity.
