State golf: Tough conditions drive up scores in AAAAAA girls; Habersham 14th, GHS 17th after opening round

By AccessWDUN

OAKWOOD — Tough conditions made for some higher than normal scores Monday in the first round of the Class AAAAAA girls state golf championships at Chicopee Woods Golf Course.

Johns Creek led the way with a 12-over par, 228 team total. The Lady Raiders held a slim three-shot lead over Pope, who sits in second place with a 15-over, 231. Northview is third at 16-over, 232.

The second round will get under way on Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. at Chicopee.

Area teams Habersham Central and Gainesville did not fare well. The Lady Raiders shot an 86-over, 302 and is tied for 14th after the first day. Gainesville, which has never finished out of the top 10 at the state meet, sits 17th after firing a 101-over, 317.

Gainesville coach Clay McDonald said it was not the kind of day they were expecting.

"The conditions were tough but honestly we just didn't play well as a team," he said. "We're a young team with only one player who had played in state tournament. But, the scores today are not what we're used too. We'll have to come back out (Tuesday) and see if we can shave some strokes off and finish strong."

Amy Ng of Johns Creek led the individual leaderboard after carding a 1-over par 73. Christyn Carr of Northview and Lizzie Reedy of Pope are just one-shot back at 74 tied for second. In fact, seven players are within four shots of the lead heading into the second round.

Kiley Blackburn of Habersham Central and the Lady Red Elephants' Vivian Robinson each shot 92 to lead their respective teams. Catherine Lama of Habersham Central also shot a 93. Kelley Kastner was the third scorer for the Lady Raiders with a 117.

Catherine Cook was Gainesville's second scorer shooting a 112 and Morgan Nichol also counted for Gainesville with a 113.
