Summer Food Service Program available to children in Hall, throughout the state

While students in need have easy access to free or reduced price lunch during the school year, Summer can be a challenge.

"It's really important that we provide the continuity of meal service that is lost when school is closed during the summer months," Falita Flowers said.

Flowers is Nutrition Services Director for Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning, the agency that administers the Summer Food Service Program.  The federally funded program seeks to fill the summer gap when it comes to access to healthy meals.

In Hall County, 13 locations are available for the meals.  The state partners with various organizations to identify sites in communities.

"These organizations can be private non profit organizations.  They can be churches, local school systems, colleges and universities that are offering summer programming on campus or units of local government ," Flowers said.

The free meals are available for children 18 and under and some eligible adults, according to Bright from the Start.
