Brenau adds online master's degree in communications, media studies

Brenau University is now accepting applicants for its new online Master of Arts in communication and media studies that will begin in August.

After reviewing the program outline and supporting documents submitted by the university, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges acknowledged by letter earlier this month that the online master’s program conformed with the Brenau mission and complied with academic standards the the Mass Communication Department. Prospective students can apply now for enrollment in the program at www.brenau.edu/apply/.

Christina White, who oversees online student recruitment for the university, said offering a master’s degree in communication and media studies online will open the field to a much larger audience.

“We have been and continue to be aware of the increasing need for online studies,” White said. “This degree is one way we ensure we are moving in that direction while creating exceptional programs that truly work online. Brenau understands how necessary it is to have these options for working adults, and we are really interested in giving that option to the community.”

Juli Clay, chair of the Brenau Mass Communication Department, said the degree is modeled after an executive Master of Business administration degree, which includes 30 hours of coursework over 10 courses and no final thesis.

“So working adults truly can retool with this degree,” Clay said. “They can add that extra layer to make themselves more marketable.”

Clay explained that communication and media studies skills are not industry specific. “Every organization in every industry needs strong communicators,” she said, “so the tools our students gain will be applicable in any position.”

The university recently announced the addition of an online bachelor’s degree in communication and media studies and expansion of enrollment in the daytime mass communication undergraduate program based on the Gainesville campus.
