The body of an 11-year-old boy who disappeared in a pond in Barrow County Thursday evening was recovered Friday afternoon, according to a county emergency services official.
Capt. Scott Dakin with Barrow County Emergency Services said the boy's body was recovered from the 3-acre pond on Hancock Bridge Road around 4:20 p.m. Friday.
Multiple media outlets Friday identified the boy as Andrie Lurco.  He had been boating in the pond.
"My understanding is there was the two brothers and a neighbor that were on the boat, and they believe the boat was starting to sink, and the young boy jumped off to start swimming," Dakin said in an interview with AccessWDUN.
Two of them made it to shore, but Lurco disappeared beneath the water.
Neighbor Tim McKeehan spoke with CBS 46 on Thursday.
"It's a scary feeling. I have grandkids too. I've lost one, you know, years ago too in a car wreck.  It's bad news you know. 'Why' is what you ask," McKeehan said.
Authorities got the initial call around 6:30 p.m. Thursday.  They searched until dark, according to Dakin.
"Diving into the pond is risky and the safety concerns for the divers after dark were too high.  We consulted with the family and the search was called off until Friday morning. Two deputies remained at the pond overnight," Dakin wrote in a news release.
Crews returned to the water around 7:00 a.m. Friday, and after searching throughout the day, located the body around 4:20 p.m. using a remote controlled sonar system from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Barrow County Emergency Services Chief John Skinner said the help of many people allowed his department to keep searching and help the family start the grieving process.
"Thank you to Jackson County Fire's Dive Team, Hall County Sheriff's Dive Team, Barrow County Sheriff's Office, Department Of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division, Georgia Emergency Management Agency, Chick-fil-A of Bethlehem and Barrow County Schools. Your assistance is truly appreciated."
