COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina baseball team's struggles have become even more challenging with starting catcher Chris Cullen sidelined for the rest of the season after knee surgery.
The school announced Tuesday that Cullen had torn cartilage removed from his left knee. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound sophomore from Cumming, Georgia had started 31 games this season. Earlier this year, Gamecocks ace Clarke Schmidt was lost for the season after tearing a ligament in his elbow.
Cullen had five homers and 18 RBIs this season at South Carolina. A year ago, Cullen was named to the all-SEC freshman team.
The Gamecocks are 30-21 and have lost seven straight SEC series heading into the final conference weekend against Georgia.
