$5 purchase turns into $10,000 for Gainesville Rubber Duck Derby winner

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

The grand prize winner in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier annual Rubber Duck Derby took home $10,000 with a single purchase of a five-dollar chance at the prize.

Rich Godbee got the good news in a phone call Friday night from the clubs' CEO Steven Mickens.

A posting on the clubs' Facebook page notes that Godbee "purchased one duck.  Yes, one duck."

Other winners listed in the posting are:

1st Prize 1 carat diamond from Gainesville Jewelry: Pamela Andris
2nd Prize Lanier Island Resort Getaway: Matt Nix
3rd Prize Kipper Tool Prize Pack: Jacqueline Robinson
4th Prize Walt Disney World Resort 4 Hopper passes John Burgess
5th Prize Yeti Cooler donated by Hargrove Engineers: Mark Sosebee
6th Prize Tour passes and Teepee stay at North Georgia Canopy tours: Kirsten Conaway

Funds for the clubs are raised from the purchase of small yellow plastic ducks.  Each duck costs five dollars.  Around 20,000 were sold this year.  The ducks are then dumped into Lake Lanier at the rowing venue on Clarks Bridge Road and the winner is the first one that floats across the finish line.

The post-race Cinco de Mayo party was called off because of the weather.  This was the first year it was to be held.  The derby, since its inception, has, until this year, been held on a Saturday, featuring daylong activites leading up to the race.
