Man sentenced to three years in prison in Hall dog shooting case

A Hall County man received a sentence of ten years, with three to serve behind bars, in a July 2015 incident that involved the fatal shooting of another man's dog.

Dewayne Steven Motes, 54, and two family members had faced charges for allegedly fighting with a 55-year-old man and shooting his dog on Benson Drive.

A jury Friday found Motes guilty of aggravated cruelty to animals, criminal damage to property in the 2nd degree, battery and criminal trespass, according to Superior Court of Hall County documents.  The jury found him not guilty of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Part of Judge C. Andrew Fuller's sentence includes a $6,300 fine.

Motes' son, Matthew Steven Motes, was acquitted of all counts in his trial Wednesday, according to jury verdict documents.

Matthew Motes' brother, Nicholas Motes, was the other family member facing charges in the case.  Nicholas' trial has not yet been scheduled, Hall County District Attorney Lee Darragh said in an email.

Matthew Motes was 27 at the time of the incident, Nicholas Motes was 28.
