Soccer: Two area teams move on, several more set to battle in 1st round

By AccessWDUN Staff

The Lakeview Academy and Jefferson girls soccer teams each moved on to the "Sweet 16" of the state playoffs, while eight other northeast Georgia programs fell in the opening round of the postseason on Tuesday.

Twelve more teams will begin their state tournament quests on Wednesday, while several more will compete on Thursday and Friday.

Those teams setting out will look to put up results like the Lakeview girls, who notched a 7-4 win over Mt. Vernon on Tuesday. The Lady Lions were led by a three-goal performance from standout striker Carmen Wagner in the Class A bracket.

Meanwhile, Jefferson traveled to Southeast Whitfield and ran away with a 5-0 win in the first round. The outcome helped Region 8-AAAA teams to go a perfect 4-0 in the first round, as St. Pius, North Oconee and Oconee County also prevailed.

It was a tough night for most other programs from around the area on Tuesday, including four losses suffered by one goal apiece. (NOTE: Scroll down for a complete list of scores from Tuesday and a schedule of remaining postseason contests.)
