No. 2 UNG pounds out big win over West Georgia

DAHLONEGA — The second-ranked University of North Georgia baseball team soared past West Georgia in midweek action Tuesday evening with a 12-3 win over the Wolves. The Nighthawks improve to 37-8 on the season with the victory.

UNG plated the first run of the ballgame on a Trevor Sams sacrifice fly in the first inning. The Nighthawks added six more runs in the bottom of the second. North Georgia recorded five straight RBI singles, capped off by Sams singling to left and driving in his second run of the ballgame in the bottom of the second. Bill Leroy drove in the final run of the inning on an RBI double down the left field line to give the Nighthawks a 7-0 lead.

West Georgia got on the board in the top of the third on an Artemis Kadkhodaian two-run homer to center. The Wolves added another run in fourth on an RBI single by Logan Arnett. UNG got one run back in the bottom half on a Connor Corbitt double to right center that plated Leroy.

The Nighthawks scored the final four runs of the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth. Michael Gouge led off the inning with a solo bomb to left center, one of three homers for the Nighthawks in the inning. Corbitt and Steven Tomlinson hit back-to-back dingers with two outs to give the game its final score, 12-3.

NOTES
- Derrick Pickvet (5-0) got the start and picked up the win allowing three runs in his five innings of work on five hits and four walks, while striking out four.

- The Nighthawks were led at the plate by Conner Hoover and Connor Corbitt who had three hits each and drove in a combined four runs on the night.

- North Georgia improves to 17-4 all-time against West Georgia and have won three straight in the series. It is the first season sweep in the home-and-home series since 2011.

UP NEXT
The Nighthawks were originally scheduled to host Shorter on Wednesday evening, however that game was cancelled this evening. North Georgia will wrap up regular season play this weekend with a three-game set against Emmanuel (Ga.). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday at Bob Stein Stadium.
