Suwanee preps for White Street Park orchard opening, sets guidelines with Harvest Farm

City leaders in Suwanee are prepping for the "soft" opening of the new additions to its White Street Park, which will include a new orchard, play area, walking trails and pavilion.

The park is expected to have its "soft" opening on Saturday, May 20, with a dedication ceremony to follow at a date that has yet to be determined, according to city documents.

Harvest Farm, the organization that manages the community garden at the park, will also help manage the orchard. Leaders with Harvest Farm and the city have been hammering out the details in terms of up-keep responsibilities.

"We anticipate there's going to be people who aren't necessarily interested in gardening in a traditional garden, but will be very interested in helping and maintaining the orchard area," said Marty Allen, city manager.

Harvest Farm plans to establish a five-member group called "Friends of the Orchard" to serve that purpose.

Some of the plants that will likely be planted include varieties of apple trees, pear trees, cherry treens, blueberry shrubs and kiwi vines, among others.

Plans also call for beehives to be installed.
