Lumpkin County hires former McIntosh coach to take over girls hoops

DAHLONEGA — Former McIntosh coach David Dowse has been selected and approved to take over the girls basketball program at Lumpkin County High School.

Dowse has a career recird of 241 wins and 142 losses in 14 seasons. His teams have finished as region runner-up twice and have made nine state tournament appearances. 

“We are ecstatic to have coach Dowse coming to lead our Lady Indians Basketball program," Lumpkin schools Superintendent Dr. Rob Brown said via press release. "He was extremely impressive during the interview process, and his references raved about his work performance. He has a history of building successful programs, and he has a clear plan for establishing excellence in the Lumpkin County girls basketball program. I am excited for coach Dowse and for our girls to get started."

After beginning his career and serving seven years at Miller Grove Junior High in Dekalb County Dowse moved to Gwinnett County and served four years at McConnell Middle School. He then served six years at Grayson High School, where he became the Head Girls Basketball Coach. He was then hired in the same capacity at McIntosh High School in Fayette County where he is finishing his 11th year.

Dowse, who will teach math, earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and Middle Grades Mathematics from Indiana University. He has taught math at the middle and high school level for 28 years in four schools. He was nominated for the Teacher of the Year award three times and was a finalist once.

David has been married to Rochelle for 24 years. Rochelle, a 27-year educator, will teach science at LCHS. They have three children: Kimber, Tyler, and Taylor. Kimber is 29 and lives in Tucker; Tyler is 21 and a student at Dartmouth College; and Taylor is 21 and a student at the University of Georgia.
