Work beginning on bridge replacement over creek in Banks County

A Georgia Department of Transportation contractor is scheduled to start work this week on replacing an over 65-year-old bridge over the Grove Creek in Banks County.

The work involves the Ga. 323 bridge over the creek northeast of Gillsville.

The first order of work includes installation of traffic signs and barrier fence along the project's borders, according to a GDOT news release.

"Replacing the 28-foot bridge will be a 37.25-foot bridge north of the current bridge, this was done to minimize the environmental impacts in the area of Grove Creek," the release states.

Transportation officials said the old bridge will remain open to motorists until the new bridge is ready for use.

Talley Construction Co. of Rossville has the contract for the job. The scheduled completion date is April of 2019.
