Teacher/coach charged in $6 million drug case resigns school positions

The Hall County Board of Education Monday evening approved the resignation of the middle school teacher and coach who faces charges in a drug investigation.
 
Karla Alvarez, a former Spanish teacher and girls' soccer coach at Chestatee Middle School Academy, "had been on unpaid leave following her arrest on March 17," school district spokesman Gordon Higgins wrote in an email.
 
Hall County Multi Agency Narcotics Squad agents arrested Alvarez, 28, and Monica Pascual Brito, 24, while serving the search warrant at a residence on Crawford Oaks Drive off of McEver Road. 
 
Authorities seized 61 kilos of cocaine, a kilo of heroin and two semi-automatic rifles in the bust.  The estimated street value of the confiscated drugs is over $6.2 million.
 
Investigators are seeking a suspect believed to be Brito's brother.  Ricardo Pascual Brito, 25, has warrants in the case.
 
Both woman are charged with trafficking cocaine, trafficking heroin, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of heroin with intent to distribute and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
 
Alvarez had been a teacher at Chestatee middle since August of 2015.
