Baseball: Big inning propels Loganville past Branch

FLOWERY BRANCH — Loganville held Flowery Branch to just four hits in rolling to a 13-1, six-inning Region 8-AAAAA victory in Monday at the Hog Mountain Sports Complex.

Flowery Branch (9-9, 2-2 Region 8-AAAAA) had a chance to pull into a tie for second place in the region but fell behind quickly and could never get the lead. Loganville (9-8, 4-0) took a 2-0 lead in the second and the Falcons cut it to 2-1 in the third. But the Red Devils exploded for eight runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to invoke the Mercy Rule.

Sean Akins, Cam Holmes, Anthony Grutadaurio, and Trace Merck each had one hit for Flowery Branch.

The Falcons next wll play host to Walnut Grove (11-7, 4-2) trying to jump into third place in the region standings.
