Gainesville students advance in regional, national competitions

Gainesville High School has two teams progressing in varying competitions this spring. The FCCLA competitors to the national STAR Event in Nashville, Tenn. and a Moody's Mega Math team is headed to round two of that competition.

GHS FCCLA will head to STAR Event in July, and also recently took home an Honor Roll with Distinction award for their work in local, state and national programs.

Riley White, Caroline Reames, Arianna Alvarado, Bianca Ortiz, Danna Flores, Ashley Dabney and Emy Bueno are headed to Nashville. Daniel Bedingfield, Lizbeth Martinez, Aaron Sosa and Ashley Cruz all placed or participated in their chosen fields on the regional and state levels.

Meanwhile, Gainesville High School entered two teams in the Moody’s Mega Math Challenge, a competition for high school juniors and seniors to develop a mathematical model for a real world problem.

Only two teams per school may be entered. Gainesville's Team A is one of 200 teams out of 1121 to advance to Round 2. This is the third year in a row that Gainesville has a team advancing to Round 2. The top six teams in Round 2 will advance to the final round in New York City. The Challenge will provide funds for travel and expenses for these top six teams.

Team A consists of Pratyusha Karnati, Anna Diaz, Stephen Mc Marrow and Vraj Patel. The challenge involves research, computational skills, in-depth analysis, and communication skills.

Also on the Gainesville High School radar, the JNROTC totaled 644 man hours of service for their clean up of Longwood Park, Wilshire Trails and Holly Park. They found and removed 20 tires, two recliners, two shopping carts and 2,555 pounds of trash.
