Drivers battle in Legends, Bandolero action at AMS

By Dustin Bixby

HAMPTON, Ga. - Legends and Bandolero drivers took to the Quarter-Mile “Thunder Ring” at Atlanta Motor Speedway in the penultimate race of the Furious Four Series on Saturday afternoon.

Jensen Jorgensen earned the win in the first feature of the afternoon in the Pro division. Following a lengthy caution due to an oil down, Jorgensen was patient on the ensuing restart. He gave up to lead to Russell Fleeman, who flew past Jorgensen into turn four. Fleeman slid out of the grove on the pass, which allowed Jorgensen to regain the lead heading to the white flag.

Jorgensen then cruised to his first win of the series. William Plemons III finished second while Joshua Hicks of Senoia was third.

In the Masters division, pole sitter Bill Plemons, Jr. notched his second win of the series and added to his division points lead. In the race for second, Mark Swan held off Wade Brewer for the runner-up spot.

Cody Hall pulled back within striking distance of a division championship with a win in the Semi-Pro feature race. Hall started on the inside of row two and chased down pole sitter Rafe Slate on lap 13. Hall looked to the outside, then slipped to the inside of the track and passed Slate for the lead. Over the final eight laps, Hall held off Slate and Christopher Clanton to post the victory.

Clay Thompson dominated the Young Lion’s feature race. Thompson led from flag to flag and held off Cale Hall over the final eight laps for the win. Hunter Johnson finished third.

In the Chargers division feature, Parker Brewer led all 20 laps to earn the win. Despite half a dozen restarts, Brewer was too strong for the rest of the field. His only challenge came from his brother Pierce, who finished second, and third place finisher Brandon Collins.

Kenny Brady and Blaise Maddox entered the third race of the series tied for the top spot in the Outlaws division point standings. Maddox qualified on the pole, then led all 20 laps to earn the win and move into first in the division point standings. Maddox held off the field following four cautions including the final restart that allowed Brady to pull up to his back bumper for the final seven laps. Maddox now leads Brady by three points for first in the division point standings.

Kenneth Henderson won his third consecutive Bandits feature race to add to his division series lead. Henderson lost the lead twice throughout the race but battled back each time to post the win. Grant Thompson powered past Henderson on the second lap of the race for the lead, but could not hold on to a loose race car. He spun out in turn four on lap 3, which allowed Henderson to get back to the point.

Carson Ruark then got by Henderson on lap nine, but could only hold the lead for seven laps. Henderson again took advantage of a mistake, as Ruark got loose on the exit of turn four. From the front, Henderson held off the field over the final four laps to capture the win.

Cole McKeehan took advantage of a pair of cautions on lap nine to get to the front of the field and drove to victory lane in the Beginner Bandolero feature. McKeehan held off Garrett Erwin, who ran second for much of the race, as well as Brody Graham over the final 11 laps.

Championships will be on the line in the final race of the Furious Four Series on Saturday, May 18.
