Large-scale disaster exercise set March 17 at Habersham Central High School

The campus of Habersham Central High School near Mt. Airy will be transformed into an active emergency scene on Friday afternoon, March 17.

But despite the appearance, it will all be part of a mock large-scale disaster exercise involving local and state agencies, according to Assistant Principal Adam Bagwell.

The mock active shooter disaster will involve the Habersham County Sheriff's Office, Habersham Emergency Medical Services, Habersham County Fire Department and Georgia State Patrol, and will take place on a teacher in-service day when only students involved in the exercise will be on campus, Bagwell said.

Hours of preparation have gone into the planning of the exercise, with Georgia Emergency Management Agency school safety officials assisting with scenarios.

"This is one of those situations where you hope you never need the training, but if you do need it you want to be prepared," Bagwell said.
