Homeless man leads Rabun deputies to man allegedly dealing drugs out of Clayton fast food eatery

An act of kindness by a Rabun County sheriff's deputy led to a tip that resulted in a drug arrest last week.

Mitchell Posey, special agent in charge of the Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office, provided details of how the incident occurred.

The deputy noticed that a homeless man was in need of help. When the deputy asked how he could help, the man told him he was hungry so the deputy took him two hamburgers, Posey said. As the homeless man ate, he informed the deputy he believed an employee of a local fast food restaurant was selling drugs from the back of the restaurant.

Rabun County authorities acted immediately on the homeless man's suspicion and approached Frank James Shelton, 31, of Clayton, locating eight bags of methamphetamine packaged for distribution in Shelton's car, according to Posey.

Shelton was arrested for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and was booked in at the Rabun County Detention Center.

The street value of the illegal drugs is $220, according to Posey.

Suspicious drug activity across the region can be reported to ARDEO at (706) 348-7410, or by contacting the local sheriff's office or police department.

Sheriff's offices in Banks, Habersham, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens, Towns and White counties, along with the Georgia Department of Public Safety, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Georgia National Guard Counter-Drug Task Force, comprise the Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office.
