Clarkesville councilman resigns after selling property

CLARKESVILLE — Clarkesville City Councilman Casey Ramsey has resigned his post effective today.

A written resignation to Mayor Barrie Aycock and the council was made public Monday morning by City Manager Barbara Kesler and provides insight into Ramsey's reasons for leaving elected office in the city,

"It has been one of my greatest honors to serve in this community," Ramsey's letter states. "This was a bittersweet decision, but it was influenced by happy circumstances. I am relocating to Dalton, therefore I will no longer meet the residence requirements to serve on this council."

In making the announcement, Kesler said Ramsey has sold his property in the city of Clarkesville and will no longer be residing in the city.

Ramsey's letter states there are projects he would like to be able to see to completion, but will be unable to do so.

"I am leaving some things behind that I wish I could see to completion, such as the rebuilding of the square and the future public safety building," Ramsey's letter states. "There are also some long-range goals that won't be achieved until well after I am settled in Dalton. I know the work of the council never ceases, and I am confident that I will see those projects and goals completed when I return to visit."

Ramsey's letter commends the mayor, council, Kesler, and the employees of the city, who he says are "truly the backbone of this city."

Ramsey was elected to the city council in 2008, and was re-elected in 2012 and 2016. He was currently serving as mayor pro tem.
