Atlanta mayor demands employer take action against embattled Gwinnett County commissioner

By AccessWDUN staff
A Gwinnett County commissioner continues to take heat for calling Georgia Congressman John Lewis a 'racist pig' in a social media post.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has now called on Tommy Hunter's employer to take action against the commissioner. Hunter works for United Consulting and the city of Atlanta does business with the company.

CBS46 in Atlanta reports Reed sent a letter to United Consulting officials demanding that they answer his call for action by the first of the week.

"Please let me know by close of business Monday, February 27 how you plan to resolve this matter," Reed said in his letter, according to the TV station.

United Consulting also issued a letter, calling Hunter's Facebook post "abhorrent."

The company also said Hunter has been disciplined, although the letter did not outline what specific action was taken against the commissioner.

Hunter's spokesman Seth Weathers told CBS 46 the letter from Reed was an overreach of his authority.

"Mayor Reed is trying to take away from the fact that you’ve got federal agents raiding City Hall right now and he’d rather talk about anything but that and I think that this is his attempt to change the conversation,” Weathers told the TV station.

Weathers said Hunter has no intention of resigning from the Gwinnett County Commission, despite repeated demands for him to do so.
