Three women who made significant contributions to Georgia’s history, including one with strong ties to Gainesville, will be inducted into the Georgia Women of Achievement Hall of Fame on March 9 at Wesleyan College in Macon.

The ceremony takes place each year in March in celebration of Women’s History Month. This year, Georgia Women of Achievement will recognize the contributions of Carolyn Mackenzie Carter, the first female photographer for the Atlanta Constitution; Clermont Huger Lee, one of Georgia’s first female landscape architects; and the late Lucile Nix, the first library head for the state of Georgia who led significant expansion across the state.

"The Hall County Library System was the primary nominator (for Ms. Nix) for this award, seconded by the Northeast Georgia Historical and Genealogical Society and the Georgia Library Association," said Lisa McKinney, Library Director, Hall County Library System.  "The Gainesville Library children’s room is named in honor of Ms. Nix, a former state librarian who made enormous strides in expanding public library access across the state of Georgia.  Ms. Nix still has family in our area; she was the aunt of Gainesville businessman Abit Massey."

Georgia Women of Achievement was created in 1990 to honor women in Georgia who have contributed extensively to the community through their professional and personal lives.
