TMU softball sweeps NCAA Division II Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. — The Truett McConnell softball team took two from NCAA Division II opponent Southern Wesleyan Monday afternoon on the road, winning game one, 10-2, and game two, 8-2.

In game one, the Bears scored five runs in the second to blow the game open. Olivia Darley and Jaden Morrison led off with bunt singles. After an infield single by Peyton Wilson to load the bases, Sarah Horne hit a triple to clear the bases. Kaitlynn Hay followed that up with a RBI single and then came around to score on a Sara Sullivan double.

The Bears scored five more in the third. Reba Jones led the inning off with a single. The Warriors gave up three consecutive walks, scoring one run, and then Wilson scored two more runs on her single.

Taylor Nix earned the win in game one, scattering three hits while striking out five.

TMU trailed game two the SWU, 2-0, going into the sixth inning when the Bears rallied to score eight in the top half of the frame. After the first three batters reached base, Sullivan brought two home on a RBI single which was followed by two back-to-back squeeze bunts to score two more. In total, the Bears had four squeeze plays in the inning, helping to score the eight runs.

Bethany Hyde picked up her second win of the season, throwing a complete game and striking out five.

The Bears will stay on the road for their next doubleheader as they travel to Brenau Thursday. First pitch of game one is at 4 p.m. in Gainesville.
