CLEVELAND — An unidentified hiker was located after he became lost in northern White County Wednesday afternoon.
White County 9-1-1 was contacted around 4 p.m. Wednesday by a male hiker who had driven to U.S. Forest Road 79, Tray Mountain Road, in northern White County, said White County Public Safety Director David Murphy on Thursday.
The hiker started walking about four miles up the road.
Murphy said he later veered off the trail and could not find his way back to his vehicle.
Once firefighters were advised of the lost hiker, White County Fire Capt. Terry Sosebee called the Georgia State Patrol and requested the activation of that agency's helicopter to assist in the search, Murphy said.
The hiker was located around 6 p.m. Wednesday, in Habersham County.
Murphy said the hiker was provided information and made contact with the crew aboard the helicopter, who guided him to Odis Barron Road in Habersham, Murphy said.
U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement personnel then met with the hiker and escorted him to safety.
The hiker was not injured, according to Murphy.
